When I was a child, I was constantly encouraged by my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles to discuss what I was reading, question what I saw on television and the news and form opinions about the world. I was fascinated with being able to talk through just about anything and make new and personal meaning out of it. To me, this is what I strive to do in my classroom and I am sure the way I was raised and the dinner table, living room, and front porch conversations I was included in as a child influenced me.
